Fall of Syria’s Assad: a blow to regional ally Iran

Syrian rebels declared President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster after seizing control of Damascus, ending his family’s iron-fisted rule after more than 13 years of civil war in a seismic moment for the Middle East. During the war, Assad relied heavily on Russian airpower and Iranian military help on the ground, mainly through militias sponsored by Tehran, including Hezbollah.
