Firefighters slow spread of fire north of LA, while new fires erupt in Southern California

Tens of thousands of people were allowed to return to their homes as authorities lifted an evacuation order on Thursday, with firefighters, aided by water-dropping helicopters, finding some success in restraining a fire in the mountains north of Los Angeles. A new blaze briefly prompted the evacuation of a university campus in a southwest county.
