Sex Matters: The wider impact of the ‘What is a Woman’ case

Helen Joyce has campaigned for clarity about biological sex in law for years. She has been censured online and been called a bigot for saying there are only two sexes and woman means biological woman.

This week, the UK’s highest court clarified the legal definition is based on biological sex.

The Supreme Court judges made clear that under the Equality Act 2010 a trans gender woman, a biological man who identifies as a woman, cannot obtain the legal protections the Act affords to women.

Judge Lord Hodge said the ruling “should not be seen as a triumph of one side over the other” and said the law still gives protection against discrimination to transgender people.

Helen has been speaking to France 24’s Gavin Lee about her fight for clarify and the significance for the U.K, and potentially Europe-wide too.
