Ukraine peace talks open in Istanbul with little hope for progress

Russian and Ukrainian negotiators met in Istanbul on Friday for their first direct peace talks in over three years. However, with Russian President Vladimir Putin absent and under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, hopes for meaningful progress in ending Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two remain slim.
